Plant Tips
Spring is near...
Now is a good time to begin planning for your landscape and gardening wants and needs. Here are some things to think about as spring approaches:
- Clean up your Garden and landscaping;
it's important to remove debris from around the roots of perennials as well as tidying up shrubs. At the same time, it's a good idea to add fresh mulch to your planting beds. If you're cleaning up your gardens yourself, just remember to step carefully so as not to break the root crown on perennials; also, if you can't tell weeds from perennials, the rule of thumb is to let it grow until it can be identified - Ponds, waterfalls, and streams need to be cleaned every spring.
- Don't wait too late to get your planting started
Put your order in early for any specialty plants as they are in high demand, and the inventory will be less because of last year's economic downturn. Perennials have a much greater survival rate when given a longer season to establish roots. Availability also decreases later in the season. - Fertilize shrubs for healthy roots and stems.
We recommend compost, especially for your perennials.
Weight restrictions on roads exist until early to mid May, so projects requiring boulders, pavers, etc. are best to start after this time.
